Professor Roberts will organize the course.  The instructors will deliver the lectures on various topics.  The TAs will write the problem sets and examinations and handle late and missing assignments.  See Ms. Ueda about drop/add, late and missing assignments and grading problems.

Class Hours

Ch 24b meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:00 a.m.  All lectures will be given in 132 Noyes. There will be recitation every other Friday before homework is due; these recitations will be held in 132 Noyes.  The focus of the recitation sessions will be how to solve the types of problems that will appear on the homework, midterm examination, and the final.  We feel that you should attend all of the lectures and recitations.  The lecture and recitation dates are listed on page 4 of this handout.

Text

The following book is required for Ch 24b:

Tinoco, Sauer, Wang and Puglisi, “Physical Chemistry.  Principles and Applications to the Biological Sciences”, 4th Edition, Prentice Hall 2002.

The following textbook is suggested as alternative reading for Ch 24b:

David Eisenberg and Donald Crothers, “Physical Chemistry with Applications to the Life  Sciences”, The Benjamin Cummings Publishing Company, Inc., 1979.

Grades

THERE WILL BE A MIDTERM AND A FINAL EXAMINATION.  Your grade is based on: HOMEWORK (40%), MIDTERM (30%), and the FINAL EXAMINATION (30%).  A problem set will be due every week, except the first two weeks and midterm week.  If you fail to obtain a copy of a homework set (or the midterm examination, or the final) when it is handed out, get it from Ms. Ueda.  Six homework sets will be due.  The course is graded, unless you petition to take it PASS/FAIL.

Homework

Homework will usually be handed out during class/recitation on a Monday (see schedule) and due 7 days later on Monday by 11:00 a.m. in the Assignment box.  Answer keys will be posted on the Ch 24 website.

Late Assignments

Homework is usually due by Monday at 11:00 a.m.  Late assignments will be accepted.  For a 100-point assignment, the penalty schedule is as follows:

30% if turned in by Tuesday 11:00 a.m., following the Monday due date.

50% if turned in by Wednesday 11:00 a.m., following the Monday due date.

70% if turned in by Thursday 11:00 a.m., following the Monday due date.

90% if turned in by Friday 11:00 a.m., following the Monday due date.

100% if turned in by Monday 11 a.m. the following week.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must turn in all homework assignments.  Failure to do so may result in a grade of "fail" or "incomplete" for the course.

Excuses for Late Homework

Excuses for late homework must be arranged in advance and in writing, signed by Dr. Roberts or Ms. Ueda.  Staple the excuse to your homework.  Excuse forms are attached.  Unexcused late assignments will be penalized.

Ch 24 and the Honor System

Students are encouraged to cooperate on the homework; however, outright copying of solutions to the homework problems from another student or textbook is NOT permissible.  Each individual is expected to complete personally the homework he/she hands in and he/she should be able to explain the homework handed in.

The midterm and final exams must be taken individually and with no discussion among students.

Ombudsman Meeting

A student representative will be chosen to serve as a liaison between the class and the Ombudsman Committee for Chemistry Undergraduate Courses.  If you have any complaints or suggestions about the course, please direct them to your ombudsman.  Please feel free to drop in to see Dr. Roberts about the course at any time.
