Caltech Engineering Club Design Competition

General Information

The goal of the competition is to design a boat, under power and size limitations, that can destroy your opponent's targets while protecting your own. The targets will be balloons.

Entrants are encouraged to work in teams. ME, EE, and CS members may all be helpful as part of your team. Individuals may also enter if they so choose.

The competition will be held on Saturday, October 9, 1999. All entries must be ready to compete at that time. There will be an optional prelim on Saturday, August 7, 1999 for contestants to test their entries. On Saturday, June 26, 1999 an open meeting to discuss the competition, find teammates, and meet members of the CEC (and join the club).

Rules

  • The competition will consist of individual aquatic matches between two teams, further known as the red team and the blue team. Each team will furnish a competitor, further known as a boat.

  • The competition will be double-eliminiation, meaning that once a boat has been defeated twice, it will be eliminated from the competition.

  • Three red balloons will be placed a distance of five feet apart across a long side of the Gene Pool. On the opposite side, three blue balloons will be placed symmetrically.

  • Each boat will start a foot in front of similarly colored balloons.

  • A match will be over when one team has successfully deflated all of the balloons of the opposite color, or when the time limit of three minutes has expired. The winner will be the team that has deflated the most balloons of the opposite color.

  • Each boat must fit following criteria upon entering the competition:
    a. The boats must be powered by batteries, and each boat can use up to four C batteries or eight AA batteries. b. Each boat must initially fit within a two-foot cube box.

  • During the competition, the following actions are prohibited:
    a. A boat may expand beyond the two-foot cube box but must reamin intact. All projectiles must be attached by a tether that may not exceed four feet in length.
    b. Electrical Warfare
    c. Chemical Warfare
    d. Nuclear Warfare
    e. Open Fires
