[Assignments] [Papers] [ProblemSets] [Optional Seminar Review] [Extensions
Policy]
Each week
there will be either a paper or a problem set. One TA will be in charge of each
assignment and will offer office hours for that week. Look for the location and
time on the handout for the assignment and please contact the TA if you have
questions, but cannot make it to the scheduled office hours. We can accommodate
another meeting or answer questions via email (but NOT after 11 pm the night
before assignment is due) Please direct questions specific to the assignment
only to the TA who is grading it. Assignments will count for 30% of your final grade.
They are due at the beginning of class on Tuesdays. Please be on time.

Reviews
for the papers are limited to ONE PAGE. Guidelines and a sample review were passed
out in class, and will be covered in discussion sessions. These reviews are to
help you develop your skills in understanding and evaluating scientific papers.
Please follow the guidelines and limit your reviews to one page. There is no
collaboration allowed for paper reviews. You may discuss the paper to help you
understand it, but your review MUST be written up independently and the
proposed experiments must be derived on your own. If you have questions, please attend the office hours (or
email, etc.) and ask us.
The goal
of our problem sets is to help you study and practice for the exams. Problem
Sets and some answer keys will be handed out in class. Discussion of concepts
covered by the problem set is allowed, but your solutions must be derived on
your own and written up individually.
You can
choose to replace your lowest problem set or paper review grade (you cannot replace a zero from an
assignment you did not do!) by attending a developmental biology seminar that
we have chosen and handing in a ONE page synopsis of the talk. Only one seminar
review is allowed and is due by March 11.
Please
contact Dr Bronner-Fraser for
homework extensions. Extensions may only be granted for medical reasons and
with a valid note from a doctor. Extensions cannot be granted for longer than a
week. There will be a 10% deduction per day for late assignments without an extension. No homework
assignment will be accepted after a week past its due date (with or without an
extension). There are no extensions for midterm or final exams.
