THE BECKMAN FELLOWSHIPS

at Caltech

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Fellowships continue the program initially funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, in 2000 at the Beckman Institute at Caltech and other Beckman Centers. This program is intended to identify, support and help develop the next generation of outstanding scientists, who demonstrate the highest levels of excellence in their accomplishments, capacity for independent work, and ability to compete for the most prestigious academic and other positions.

Terms of Appointment

Beckman Fellows will be appointed for a term of up to three years. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. by the time their appointment begins. Each Beckman Fellow will receive an annual salary of $57.5K; in addition, the BI will provide a research fund of up to $25K per year (the exact amount being determined as appropriate to each individual case), which may be spent on supplies, equipment, appropriate travel and other expenses.

We strongly encourage applications from people who already have postdoctoral fellowships or other means of support, or who have applied or intend to apply for such fellowships. In such cases BI funds will be used as a supplement to bring the stipend up to $57.5K, and the difference (up to a maximum of an additional $25K per year) will be added to the research fund. This makes the maximum possible research fund contribution from the BI Fellowship $50K per year.

Appointees will be designated "Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Scholar"; those with extensive postdoctoral experience or other special qualifications may be designated "Beckman Senior Research Fellow" and may also have the rank of Senior Research Fellow at Caltech.

Fellows may carry out their research program in affiliation with one or more existing programs (Resource Centers, Pilot Projects, Director's Initiatives, etc.) in the Beckman Institute or with a research group at Caltech outside the Beckman Institute. In the latter case, we will give priority to research plans that have significant interaction or overlap of interests with the Beckman Institute. The Beckman Institute mission statement and a listing of activities may be found on this website.

Application

Applications for the next round of Fellowships must be received no later than January 9, 2009. Recipients will be announced in early 2009, and may begin their terms in summer or fall 2009. Applications must include:

  1. A current CV.
  2. A research proposal including the planned arrangements for affiliation with a research group or groups at Caltech. The total length shall be no more than 5 pages.
  3. Three letters of reference, to be sent directly by the writers.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the scientific excellence of the candidate and the proposed project, together with the relevance of the proposed program to the Beckman Institute mission and activities. Interdisciplinary character in the project is desirable but not required.

All materials should be sent to:
