Witt vectors, lambda-rings, and absolute algebraic geometry

Jim Borger (ANU)

Lambda-rings are commutative rings equipped with certain non-linear operators. I'll explain how to extend lambda-structures from rings to schemes and how the resulting "lambda-algebraic geometry" is in a precise sense algebraic geometry over a deeper base than the ring of integers. This theory of absolute algebraic geometry agrees with many speculations about algebraic geometry over the mythical field with one element.
