ABOUT LINDY HOP AND THE SERIES

The mother of all swing dances!  This dance was born in the late 1920s, flourished in the '30s and '40s, and has continued to have an amazing resurgence today -- with thousands of people, young and old, dancing all around the world.  Come along and join our eight-week series where you'll start with the basics and be dancing the very first night.  Throughout the course, you'll learn the signature moves that make Lindy Hop such an exceptionally fun dance.  Though this dance can get extraordinarily athletic in performance and competition (with flips and slides), we'll be staying on the floor with the smooth and stylish moves!

SUMMER 2004 BASIC FIGURES -- updated July 07, 2004

Week 1
  • Basic position: Acute "v" angle with follower to the right of leader; leader's R hand on follower's lower back. Follower's L hand on leader's shoulder; L/R hand hold with follower's hand above, leader's below. Leader keeps handhold at follower's waist level, with elbow's bent to provide tension and reasonably steady.

  • Swing basic: Triple-step, triple-step, rock step. Basic with cw rotation: Leader leads basic but turns it so couples move around the floor.

  • Underarm pass: Follower pivots cw during first step of 2nd triple-step under leader's L arm, then pivots ccw on the second pass under leader's L arm

  • Send-out: Leader sends follower out from basic position to facing each other. Follower pivots ccw.

  • Leader change of hands: Rock step, from L/R hold change to R/R-triple step, leader slides across in front of follower changing hands behind back to L/R-triple step.

Week 2
  • Send-out under arm: Partners facing each other-rock step, bring follower to leader's R side-triple step (follower 1/2 turn ccw during triple step), side by side-triple step, rock step, send partner out under leader's L arm-triple step (follower 1/2 turn cw during triple step), facing each other-triple step.

  • Man's underarm turn: Facing each other-rock step, leader turns ccw under his L arm during triple step,  face each other-triple step, rock step, follower turns ccw under leader's L arm-triple step, face each other-triple step.

Week 3
  • Lindy Charleston (8 beats): Rock step (1-2), kick forward-step on outside foot (3-4), kick forward-pause middle-kick backward-step on inside foot (5-8).  Note: kick with heel down, arms sway opposite of active foot.  To start Charleston, bring follower side to side, drop L/R hand hold.

Week 4
  • Cross-body lead: Leader's rock step is diagonal back L-turn 1/4 ccw step (this puts leader outside of the follower's passing slot), with leader's leading follower across the slot during 1st triple step and facing the follower-triple step.  Leader's diagonal back-step should lead follower to a forward walk-walk instead of a rock step.  Follower passes slot to leader's left hand side, moving across the slot-triple step and going forward until reaching  tension in arm, follower then turns 1/2 ccw-triple step.

  • No lookie: Leader leads underarm pass, changing handhold from L/R to R/R handshake as follower turns into her 2nd triple step.  At the end of underarm pass triple step, leader does not face partner, instead faces side to keep slot open.  For his rock step, leader lunges to face the back, leads follower across-triple step, changes handhold-faces follower-triple step. Follower's same as cross-body lead with leader's lunge leading a walk-walk.

  • Outside turn-Pop: Lead similar to cross body lead, but at end of back-step, leader raises L/R handhold to stop position to signal turn to follower. From walk-walk, follower should face leader once he raises his L arm and match him by bringing R hand up to stop position. On 1st triple step, compress into the leader's palm to build tension into a pop-full turn cw-triple step.

Week 5
  • Send out-free spin: Swing out follower for rock-step, bring in for triple-step, push off for a free-spin triple-step.

  • Whip (8 beats): Rock-step, triple-step, step-step, triple-step.

Week 6
  • Whip/Swing-out from close position (8 beats):

  • Whip/Swing-out from open position (8 beats):

  • Lindy Circle (8 beats):

  • Shoulder release (8 beats):

  • Charleston double-kicks (8 beats):

Week 7
  • Review Charleston double-kicks (8 beats):

  • Etiquette

Week 8

  • Shadow Charleston
