  INTRO
Foxtrot

Sunday, August 13, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor)
With Diana Stefanescu & Ghislain Granger
Foxtrot, one of the most popular social dances, involves moves which are similar to Waltz, but are typically syncopated and performed with a jazzy, swinging, gliding motion. Foxtrot is often danced to big band music and resembles the dance style of Fred Astaire and
Ginger Rogers.

Cost: $3. No partner or dance experience necessary.

  INTRO
Bolero

Sunday, August 20, 2:00 - 4:00 pm.
in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor)
With Megan Nix & Kenneth Kuo.
Bolero is often considered the most romantic and graceful of the Rhythm and Latin ballroom dances. Slower and more dramatic than its "cousin," Rumba, Bolero allows one to incorporate the elegant posture of Waltz into the sensuous latin movement of Rumba.

Cost: $3. No partner or dance experience necessary.

  INTRO
West Coast Swing

Monday, September 4, 9:00 - 11:00 pm.
in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor)
With Alfred Lee.
The official state dance of California, West Coast Swing has evolved from its roots as an offshoot of Lindy Hop into a versatile dance able to be performed to a wide variety of music including blues, rock and roll, pop and R&B.  Danced traditionally in a slot where the leader dances in place while the follower travels back and forth, WCS allows for a full array of moves from other social dances including East Coast Swing, Salsa and Hustle to be adapted to its own unique style.

This workshop will introduce WCS to the novice dancer as well as basic partner dancing elements such as connection and timing through basic patterns.  If time permits, more complex patterns may be introduced.

Cost: $3. No partner or dance experience necessary.

  ADVANCE BEGINNER
Modern Jive

Monday, September 11, 9:00 - 11:00 pm.
in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor)
With Megan & Alex Ferguson.
Modern Jive, also called Ceroc, is a flashy, fun dance with similarities to swing and salsa. Its simple footwork makes it easy for beginners to pick up the basics, while its snazzy spins, twists, and dips keep the experienced dancers coming back.

Cost: $3. This workshop is meant for those who have knowledge of the basic steps. The figures taught will be new for those who have been taking the class this summer.

  INTRO
Mambo

Monday, September 18, 9:00 - 11:00 pm.
in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor)
With Megan Nix & Robert Nissen.
Mambo, which is often called "Salsa danced on beat two," is a playful and flirty dance utilizing the same Cuban motion of Salsa and the other American Rhythm dances, but involves more sharp, precise movements and dramatic arm positions than Salsa.

Cost: $3. No partner or dance experience necessary.

Giro — Turn; a turning step or figure.
Sacada — The most common term for a displacement of a leg or foot by the partner’s leg or foot. Occurs when a dancer places their foot or leg against a leg of their partner and transfers weight to their leg so that it moves into the space of and displaces the partner’s leg.

Definitions from
A Guide to Tango Terminology:

Colgada — A { shared-axis } spinning move executed by a couple at the end of an inside barrida in which both dancers lean out away { in counter weight } from each other and spin rapidly.
Volcada — A falling step: The leader causes the follower to tilt or lean forward and fall off her axis before he catches her again.  The process produces a beautiful leg drop from her.  This { shared-axis } movement requires the support of a close embrace.
