Argentine Tango : All-Night Milonga

Occasion: Tango Club hosts the only monthly all-night tango dance party in the Los Angeles area!
When: Friday, December 16th, 11:15 pm to ~5:00 am.
Where: in Winnett Lounge (2nd floor) -- NOTE! There is a different location for this month's milonga. It is NOT in Dabney Hall.
Cost: FREE! Happy Holidays from Tango Club!!
Lesson: Starting at 10:30 pm. Taught by Caltech Tango Club members.

Occasion: Celebrate the end of Fall term with a night of dancing, featuring a mix of ballroom & social dances.

West Coast Swing Party

What: Show off your stuff at the end of the WCS Series and meet other WCS dancers.
When: Thursday, November 28th.
General Dancing: Starts at 8:30 pm until the music stops.

Viennese Waltz Night at Occidental College

Occasion: A special night of Viennese Waltz brought to you by Occidental College.
Featuring: Live music by the Occidental College orchestra, plus a performance piece by Oxy Historical Dance Troupe!
When: Saturday, November 19th, starting at 8:20 pm with the dance exhibition starting at 8:30 pm.
Where: At the Samuelson Pavilion, Occidental College. Directions can be found at: www.oxy.edu
Carpool: A carpool will meet at 7:30 pm at the corner of San Pasqual & Wilson.
Cost: Free.
Dresscode: Formal attire encouraged. Tails and gowns will not be out of the norm!

West Coast Swing Night-Out at the Hacienda

When: Thursday, November 17th
Where: The Hacienda, 525 N Sepulveda Blvd, El Segundo, CA.
Carpool: Meet at the corner of San Pasqual & Wilson at 8:30 pm. Carpool will leave at 8:45 pm.

Please bring a car if you can drive. Drivers print out directions.

Cost: No cover charge at the door.
Directions: 110S.  105W.  Exit Sepulveda South (the exit after LAX airport).  The Hacienda will be on the right after a few lights.  There is a big red neon sign that says "Hacienda".  There is a parking garage on the right, and the ticket can be validated inside the hotel. For Hacienda contact info: 310.615.0015.
Extras: Please remember to tip the DJ if they have a jar out.  Bring  an ID, as discussed.  Have a great time.

Viennese Waltz Workshop

What: A 2 hour crash-course in VW in preparation for Viennese Waltz Night at Occidental College.
Instructors: Top-amateur dancers Mike and Alice Cho.
When: Sunday, November 13th, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Where: in Winnett Lounge
Cost: $5. Free for Caltech Ballroom Team members.
Note: The VW workshop will be held in lieu of the regular Beginner Team Class. This workshop is open to the public.

Featuring: Professional instructors Edmundo & Elizabeth Thomas
What: Edmundo & Elizabeth will be teaching a workshop on their specialty, Milonga con Traspie (techniques for dancing triple-step milonga style). This 3-hour workshop is part of the Intermediate Argentine Tango summer workshop series.

2005 Caltech Dancesport Competition

Occasion: CBDC hosts it's 2nd annual Dancesport Competition which features event competitions in both International Latin & Standard and American Rhythm & Smooth, plus a number of Nightclub events.

The competition will feature members of the Caltech Ballroom Dance Team, as well as a host of other amateur and collegiate dancers from around the country!

When: Saturday, January 29th. Competition held all day, check the Schedule on competition website for individual event times.
Where: in Brown Gymnasium
Particants: Competitors should visit the Event Info section of the website for competition details.
Spectators: The competition is open to the general public and spectators are much welcome to watch, enjoy and cheer.

The event is free for all Caltech affiliates, and only $5 for the general public.

Argentine Tango Beginner Workshop

What: A 2-week workshop for complete beginners & novices. These workshops are amateur-taught, and are designed to help complete beginners to become familiar with the basic elements in tango and to give a preview of more complicated figures that arise from these elements. We will focus a lot on leading and following exercises and technique to help beginners become comfortable with the dance.
When: 2 Mondays only. January 10, 6-8 pm & January 17, 6-9 pm.
Where: in Winnett Lounge
Cost: $1
Description: - January 10 will cover basics of walking, molinete and ochos. These are fundamental elements in tango.
- January 17 will review ochos and introduce some basic paradas,
ganchos, leg drags and forward sacadas, plus basic Milonga patterns.
Notes: No partner or experience necessary. Must attend Jan. 10 workshop to take Jan. 17 workshop. Close-toed shoes only. Smooth-bottomed shoes & no loose heels (heel of shoe strapped to foot) are highly recommended for pivoting.

"Double-trouble" Modern Jive Workshop

What: On Sunday, Jan 16th, we'll be holding the "Double Trouble" Modern Jive workshop -- where one guy dances with 2 girls (I know, what a perfect place for it with these Caltech gender ratios...but it sounds like lots of fun!).
When: Sunday, January 16, 12:00 - 2:00 pm
Where: in Winnett Lounge
Instructor: Robin Nelson
Cost: $15 for the 2 hour workshop. Your $15 goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and is tax-deductable.
Registration: We would REALLY REALLY like to know in advance how many people are coming, so please reply to me if you are. If you absolutely can't commit till the last minute, just show up anyway, but otherwise let me know!
Other stuff: If you have a friend without modern jive experience, he/she (especially she!:)) is welcome too - since it's a new type of modern jive dancing, we'll be starting with the basics.
