  Series Description

CBDC offers a host of ballroom and social dance classes throughout the year with the class series synchronized with the Caltech term schedule. There are usually 3-4 class sessions per quarter (about 4-5 or 8-10 weeks per session), with two sessions in the summer (about 8 weeks each). The classes are held on different nights, currently on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Sundays, and typically the club offers both amateur and professionally-taught classes.

Occasionally, we also hold special 1 to 3 week long workshops/seminars that focus on specific dances. Currently, CBDC is offering a Social-Ballroom Workshops. The workshop schedule varies per series, so please check the Workshop section for specific details.

All our classes can be used for PE credit. Non-Caltech affiliated people are welcome to all classes. No partner is necessary. After every class, we have refreshments and open dancing.

Amateur-Taught Class

The amateur-taught class is currently $1 per person, payable on the honor code. It is free for frosh, first-year graduate students, and those taking the class for PE credit. It is generally a beginner-level class.

Professionally-Taught Class

The professionally-taught class is also usually at a beginner level; however, there is less review of the figures from week to week, so regular attendance is required. The cost as of June 2004 is $6 per class for Caltech students and $8 for all others. There is a $1 discount per class if you pay in advance for the entire series. No refunds are given, but prior arrangements can be made if you know you will miss a class.

Professionally-taught intermediate-level classes are occasionally offered for certain dances which have a significant level of public interest.

International-Style Competitive Dancing

Competitive-level Ballroom Team Classes and technique practices are taught by professional/top-amateur dancers or experienced CBDC competitive dancers. These classes focus on International-style syllabus figures and specifically emphasize technique & style to train dancers for competition. See the Caltech Ballroom Dance Team page for more information.
