The visit of Mr. Adrian Severin, President of OSCE and Claudiu Lucaci,
Consul General of Romania at Los Angeles at Caltech
On Thursday, November 6th, 2003, the Association of Romanians at Caltech
hosted Mr. Adrian Severin, former Foreign Affairs
Ministry of Romania, currently serving as President of OSCE (Organization
for Security and Co-operation in Europe) and Mr. Claudiu Lucaci, Consul
General of Romania at Los Angeles. The visit was part of a one week
business trip of Mr. Adrian Severin in the L.A. Area, to meet with
representatives of the Romanian community.
After being greeted by Jim Endrizzi, Assistant Director of the ISP (International Student Programs) and by several members of ARCA, the visitors were offered a quick tour of the campus. They learned about Caltech and its culture, about the interraction between students with different backgrounds, and the scientific and research activies at Caltech.
The tour was followed by a meeting in the Brennen Conference Room, where
the visitors also met Mrs. Margo Marshak, Vice-President of Student
Affairs. After a short introductory speech by Bogdan Dumitru, the organizer of the event, Mr. Severin addresed problems of high interest to our community, such as the way the Romanian government could facilitate
the contact between Romanian students abroad and Romanian companies. What
was initially intended to be a short speech rapidly transformed into a Q&A
session, as the ARCA members overwhelmed Mr. Severin and Mr. Lucaci with
questions showing their high interest in performing research activities
while keeping close contact with potential Romanian employers. Proving
great understanding of the current situation at home, Mr. Severin tried to
answer all the questions posed, a task that turned out to be very diffcult
due to the short time on hand.
The closing time found us with yet a lot of question marks, but
somewhat optimistic about the future relations with members of the
Romanian government. It is worth saying the Mr. Severin is the first
high-ranked Romanian politician to visit Caltech.
We would like to extend our thanks to the ISP and especially to Jim Endrizzi, whose help was essential in organizing this event.

Purpose:
-
The proposed event has two main intended purposes. First, we would like
to familiarize the members of the Caltech community with the Eastern-European culture, in general, and with the Romanian culture in particular. Through discussions and information materials, we are hoping to give the Caltech community members an unbiased image of Romania. Second, the concert itself will provide both a
mean of sharing some of the cultural history of Romania through music, and it would also be a high-class performance from the musical point of view. Please see
attached appendix with short bios of the performers, and program of the concert.
-
Through this event we are hoping to project a new image of Romania amongst members of the Caltech community and to support the bond and interaction amongst students from different cultures in the diverse environment of Caltech.
