We have a new server!
Get all the details here.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY (07/19/2002):
ITS will no longer transfer files to the alumni server for recent
graduates prior to closing ITS accounts. One option ITS has
suggested is to burn your ITS files onto a CD prior to your
ITS account being closed (usually mid-October after graduation).

How do
I access the Alumni Server?
To take advantage of the server you must have a computer
with a connection to the Internet. The server is primarily intended to
provide members with:
How to
create your own home page
In order to have a home page served by the alumni web server,
you must have an account on the alumni machine. If you are a Caltech alum
with a home page somewhere else, we can add a link from our alums page
that points directly to that home page.
To make a home page in your account on www.alumni.caltech.edu,
here's what you do:
- Create a directory in your home account called .public_html
(note that this is different from the rest of the Caltech ITS cluster,
where they use public_html
without the dot).
- Make sure the directory and all files in it are searchable by the
www account. You can make your files world-searchable with a command
such as chmod a+r filename
- Create a file within .public_html
called .index.html -
this is your home page. You can put whatever valid HTML you want into
it.
- The URL for your home page is http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~your
username/
- If you would like to be included in the alumni home pages list, either
fill out this form or send email to www@alumni.caltech.edu. Please include
the following information:
- The URL for your home page.
- Your name exactly as you want it to appear in the list.
- Your class year (optional, but makes search-by-year easier).
- Your House affiliation (optional, but makes search-by-house easier).
If you specifically do not want your house or year listed,
please explicitly state that in your request.
For additional information on HTML and WWW, you can check
out the documentation about the Web
at Caltech.
Email Forwarding
Instructions
|
What is it?
Email Forwarding is the ability to have email
addressed to your alumni account forwarded to any address you wish.
It can be changed as often as needed so if you change jobs or your
isp goes out of business and you lose your email address, you can
simply update your email forwarding to a new address. This gives
you the ability to have one publishable email address to give out
and put on your business cards without worry of losing it.
How do I set it up?
There is one way to set it up, however, you have the
option of doing it yourself or sending the request to us.
To set it up yourself (helpful to have at least a rudimentary understanding
of unix):
- Log in to your alumni account through secure shell (SSH)
- Using your favorite text editor (vi, emacs, etc.), create a
file called .forward (note the preceding dot).
- Type the email address you want to forward to on a single line
and save the file. That's it!
To have us set it up for you, simply send an email to help@alumni.caltech.edu
with your username and the email address you want to forward to
and it will be updated once every 24 hours, Monday through Friday.
