Local Area Guide: Skiing

If interested in skiing or snowboarding (either at resorts or backcountry), please consider joining the "skiandboard" mailing list. The skiandboard-discuss list is similar, but intended for more coverage (e.g. discussion of avy and weather conditions, trip reports, ....).

Local resorts

  • Big Bear Mtn Resorts includes Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The two resorts have interchangeable tickets and a free 1.5 mile shuttle. 26 lifts combined. Bear Mtn. has advanced terrain parks. Lift tickets ~$50.
  • Mammoth Mountain Located in Mamoth Lakes, about a 5 hour drive from Los Angeles, or one hour from Bishop.
  • Snow Valley, a bit closer than Big Bear.
  • Mountain High, with E. and W. resort. The West resort is about 80% snowboarders and has terrain parks. Lift tickets ~$50, or buy a 6-pack for $180. Driving time from Pasadena is about 1 hour.
  • Mount Baldy. Driving time from Pasadena is about 1 hour.

It looks like Mt. Waterman (in the San Gabriels) is no longer in business.
