Physical Chemistry of the Air-Water Interface - Environmental Implications

We study the physical and chemical properties of the air-water interface in situ using a novel approach based on online electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

We are in our way to elucidating the unique nature of ion-ion interactions therein, and how the solvent participates in the propagation of such interactions over distances vastly exceeding the range of direct electrostatic forces

We have shown that the air-water interface is neutral over acidic pH = 3 water, but behaves as a superacid below pH < 4, in the sense that most non-alkane gases can be protonated upon collision with it

We have obtained direct information on the intermediates, products and mechanism of various key gas-liquid reactions, such the ozonation of terpenes, and the antioxidants protecting the lung epithelium, as well as the catalytic role of iodide in the release of halogens from the ozonation of marine aerosols

We are currently working on the unambiguous identification and reactivity of oxo-polyiron species in Fenton chemistry at the gas-water interface and the role of percolating hydrogen bond networks in the interfacial physical chemistry of hydroxylic liquids.
