Topics in Earth Surface Processes:
Fires, Debris Flows, and the Geomorphology of Burned Landscapes

JPL/NASA
Field trip: Saturday, January 23.
The 2009 Station Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains offers us an unprecedented opportunity to examine a steep mountain landscape following fire and during a potential wet winter. We will discuss dominant erosion processes following fires, the physics of debris flows, the effect of fire on the landscape over long timescales, as well as hazards and mitigation efforts.

This class will consist of weekly student-lead discussions of scientific literature and a class project to predict the triggers, locations, and sizes of debris flows in the San Gabriel Mountains using GIS and field observations. This will include field excursions and moderate hiking off trail in steep terrain.

  • Time: Friday 12-2pm (except week of March 1)
  • Location: 267 Arms
  • Instructor: Michael Lamb
  • TA: Ajay Limaye. Office hours: by appointment in the GIS lab (309 North Mudd).
