The cohomology ring of the Grassmannian has been studied for well over a century, but the corresponding questions for the Grassmannians of the symplectic and orthogonal groups are rather unexplored. I will discuss my work with Buch and Kresch on a Giambelli type formula for arbitrary symplectic Grassmannians, and some first applications. If time permits, I will try to give the main idea of the proof.
