E-010 class information
E-010 is the technical presentation class offered at the California Institute of Technology. The purpose of the course is to teach you how to present information to an audience.
Goals of course
The goal of E-010 is to practice verbal communication skills, and learn how to effectively use the various visual aids. Through practice you should learn how to effectively use a variety of different visual aid devices including the whiteboard, the video presenter and the video projector. By practical experience you will gain poise and confidence in speaking in front of a group. The goal of the course is not to teach you what to say, but to teach you how to present it.
During the term you will be expected to give 3 talks and 3 introductions. At least one of the talks must be of a technical nature, although all talks should be in a technical manner. This means that you should start off with an introduction, which can include information as to what the content of the talk is going to be, why we care about it and any basis that the audience needs to know to understand the main points of the talk. The talk should then continue with the main body when you explaine the topic, and wrap up with a conclusion which should tie together the talk.
Your job as a speaker is to communicate information to the audience, it is not to try and impress the audience by talking over their heads and use terms that they don't know. Try and put yourself in the position of an audience who does not know the topic, and ask yourself if you have made toe information clear.
All talks should be between 8 and 10 minutes long, and a general rule for an introduction is about 10% of the length of the talk.
