Updates and News

What's been keeping us busy this school year (2011 - 2012)?

6/1/12: It's Gratitude Day! We gave out free cups of boba milk tea to 200 students during lunch hour. In exchange, we got each student to write a couple of thank-you cards to their friends, TAs, and professors. We're proud to announce that over 500 cards were delivered around campus today. We will definitely be repeating this awesome event next year.

Thank you everyone for attending our events and supporting our club this year. We'ill be hosting elections for next year's exec board very soon. Stay tuned! :)

5/14/12: Active Minds hosted a table at the Caltech Health Fair today (we're featured in this article!) And of course we offered free massages from Massages by AVO, our favorite gift to you.

2/29/12 to 3/2/12: It's National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Did you know that 20% of college students suffer from anoxeria, bulimia, or binge-eating disorder? We hosted 3 big events this week and served free lunch to our attendees.

1. Keynote Address by Ragen Chastain: "The Positive Body"

2. Workshop on Healthy Eating at Caltech - featuring Dr. Jennifer Levin (health educator) and Jon Webster (Chandler)

3. Eating Disorder Discussion Panel - featuring Dr. Stuart Miller (MD), Dr. Lisa Hoffart(PsyD), Jill Brook (MA, nutritionist), David Marasa (trainer)

12/03/11: We joined forces with the Caltech Y for their Decompression social break this fall term. To help our undergrads relax before finals, we hired 3 masseuses from Massages by AVO to provide free back-and-shoulder massages over a two-hour period. The Caltech Y served burgers, hot dogs, cookies, chips, and fruit, and tracked down some musical entertainment for the crowd. If you attended, be sure to leave positive feedback for Avo and his team.

11/18/11 to 11/20/11: Gloria and Liz J. attended the National Mental Health on Campus Conference in College Park, MD, hosted by the national Active Minds organization. We were in the company of over 500 attendees -- students, faculty, and staff from across the country. We attended daily workshops on how to host effective events and meetings, maximize student impact on campus, reach out to a diverse audience, and inspire the next generation of mental health advocates. Most importantly, this conference gave us the opportunity to build a strong foundation for networking with other chapters in the Southern California area, and other parts of the country.

Some amazing speakers that we heard from at this conference include Chamique Holdsclaw (WNBA superstar), Meg Hutchinson (folk singer/songwriter), Dr. Thomas Insel (Director of the National Institute of Mental Health), and Ane Romero (legislative assistant to Congresswoman Grace Napolitano). Great ideas and inspiration.

10/03/11: Active Minds @Caltech kicked off the school year with National Day Without Stigma, and it was a huge success! Our goals for this day were to raise awareness for the prevalence of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and increase help-seeking behavior (if needed). We set up a table outside of Red Door Café and provided students with free food, drinks, programming resources, and prizes.  Several members from the Caltech Counseling Center also joined us in the first hour to “meet and greet” with students in a public space.  We also displayed a banner on the table with a pledge against mental health stigma, and 120 students stopped by to sign their names.

Caltech Today did a feature article on this event.
