There are a number of mailing lists to keep system administrators on campus in touch with each other as well as helping each other keep up to date on new developments for their platforms or supported services.
ITS has been working to standardize some of the mailing list addresses sysadmins on campus use to share information, and this little project is the result. Click on the listnames for additional information about each list.
For a campuswide, low-traffic way to be kept informed about software availability, bug reports, and service outages related to the platform or service:
Note that messages sent to any of the above -announce lists will automatically be posted to the newsgroup caltech.sysadmin, although posts to the newsgroup will not be forwarded back to the mailing lists. The security-announce list is an exception; its messages are archived at http://www.its.caltech.edu/its/security/announce/ .
For campuswide discussion of any and all issues related to the platform or service:
ITS is discouraging non-Caltech email addresses from subscribing to all of these lists, so we can include mention of security things without concern that we're including a hacker...
To subscribe to any of the new lists, send an email to majordomo@caltech.edu with 'subscribe listname' in the body of the message, for instance:
subscribe unix-announce
To unsubscribe from any of the lists, send an email to majordomo@caltech.edu with 'unsubscribe listname' in the body of the message, for instance:
unsubscribe unix-forum
All of the above lists are archived to the web. All of the -announcement lists (except security-announce) also archive to the newsgroup caltech.sysadmin.
As a companion part of this project, the following majordomo and non-majordomo mailing lists are being phased out:
If you were previously subscribed to any of these lists, you do not need to unsubscribe from them, but you *should* consider subscribing to their new incarnations.
If you have any questions about this, please drop Adele an email!
