The
Special Class for the Gifted Young (SCGY, also called Juvenile Class)
is a well-known special program in USTC for gifted young
students that were established in 1978 at the suggestion of
Dr. T.D.Lee, a Chinese American and Nobel Laureate. Every year
around 30-40 Gifted young students under the age of 16 are enrolled
from all over the nation. The admission process is highly selective
and consists of the National College Entrance Exam and an on-site
interview and exam session.
At present over 400 students have graduated from the program, many
of them come to overseas (mostly U.S.A.) to pursue a graduate degree.
Some of them have hence returned to China after completion of studies
and taken on various research and teaching positions. Most students
have outstanding academic records in school.
