Vertical Vibration

A 2-D box is being vertically vibrated. 20 Hz and 3.3g.

Movie

A 2-D box is being vertically vibrated. 20 Hz and 4g.

Movie

A 2-D box is being vertically vibrated. 20 Hz and 5g.

Movie

Comparison of a hopper discharging with and without horizontal vibration

A 2-D hopper is being horizontally vibrated. Left: flow with vibration, 20 Hz and 2g. Right: flow with no vibration, funnel flow. Movie

The exit of of hopper shows an oscillatory flow.

Immersed Collision of Particle

The motion of a 4.5 mm steel particle immersed in water is being tracked as it approaches, collides and rebounds on a wall. The liquid flow is visualized with laser-fluorescent micro-particles.

Movie

The motion of a 12.7 mm delrin particle immersed in water is being tracked as it approaches, collides and rebounds on a wall. The liquid flow is visualized with laser-fluorescent dye.

Movie

Shear Flow Experiments

High speed video of a shear flow of 4mm glass particles in concentric cylinders coated with sandpaper. The upper surface is moving to the right, while the lower surface is the outer, stationary cylinder.

Movie

High speed video of the same flow but using 6mm glass beads instead.

Movie.

Shear Flow Simulations

Two-dimensional simulation of gravity-free bounded shear flow of same size particles; the upper boundary is moving to the right and the lower to the left with equal speed.

Movie

Simulation of same flow as above with a binary mixture of particles; the diameter of the large particles is twice that of the smaller particles. Large particles are shown in red for contrast.

Movie

Vertical, sinusoidal oscillation of deep beds of granular materials

The following movies were produced using a 2-D discrete element simulation developed at Caltech.
