1. We will not cover all the material in the text. We will cover chapters 1 through 4, sections of chapter 6, chapter 7 and sections of chapter 8.
2. When I take
material from other sources including textbooks, I will identify these sources
and will try to provide photocopies of the material.
3. Assignments
will be handed out each week and are due by end of class one week later. They will count for 1/3 of the final grade. The midterm and final examinations will each
be worth 1/3 of the final grade. Late
assignments will lose 20% for their value for each day late. This does not apply when there are valid
reasons for turning in your assignments late.
4. You may
collaborate on the homework but I want you to first try to solve each problem
by yourself. Please spend at least an
hour on each assignment working alone. At this stage if you feel collaboration would
be helpful, you may then collaborate. In any case your answers are to be your
own and should reflect your own understanding of the material. Be reasonable!
5. Problem
sets will be expected to take at most 4 to 5 hours. I will monitor this and work with the TAs so
that this is the case.
6. TA
recitation sections are scheduled throughout the week. Take advantage of these
times to come get help and ask questions.
